In an appeal filed by Mate Mahadevi’s in the Supreme Court against the Karnataka High Court’s Judgement, delivered in 2003, Supreme Court upholds the State Government’s 1998 ban on her edited book, ‘Basava Vachana Deep’.
Supreme Court concluded that in the absence of a reasoned order, one can only infer from the oral arguments before the bench that the state’s subjective opinion on whether a book could trigger an expression of public anger in the streets through violent manifestations, could not be challenged on the ground that there was absence of objective material before it.
