Government of India

The Election Commission of India informed the supreme Court that it agrees with its decision of a life term ban on MP’s and MLA’s convicted under criminal cases from contesting elections. The prevailing rule debars politicians sentenced to a jail term of two years or more from contesting elections for six years from the date of release from prison. The ECI stated that a life time ban is necessary to restrict the crime rate in politics.
